August 29, 2025, Beijing — The art exhibition “Xiangugu's Twelve Poems,” co-created by the Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing and German-based artist Yang Yingji, will be officially unveiled from August 30 to September 30, 2025, at the fifth-floor art corridor of Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing. The exhibition uses painting, installation, and multimedia art as its medium, presenting twelve poetic works that offer a contemporary interpretation of Eastern culture. It invites viewers to explore the aesthetic resonance between tradition and modernity through the interplay of color, space, and technology.
The Poetic Reconstruction of East-West Dialogue
Yang Yingji has been active on the international art scene for many years, with her work distinguished by its cross-cultural perspective. This exhibition continues her in-depth exploration of Eastern philosophy and symbols, incorporating Eastern aesthetics and nostalgia for her homeland into each piece through the fictional narrator “Xian Gu Gu.” She constructs a metaphorical immersive scene within the framework of “Twelve Poems,” exploring themes of memory, identity, and history. This exhibition revolves around the theme of sustainability. In these works, sustainability manifests not only through the reuse of materials but, more significantly, through the use of gemstones and minerals sourced directly from nature. The artist weaves a unique affection for Eastern art and history into the designs, presenting guests with a series of slightly abstract and whimsical pieces.
In-depth interaction with the artist
At the opening ceremony on August 29, Yang Yingji was present and shared her creative process. She hoped that the audience would temporarily depart from everyday logic and find their own interpretations in the fragmented visual language, as if interpreting a vague poem. During the subsequent guided tour, the artist led the guests in an in-depth interpretation of the cultural symbols behind the works and the inspiration for each piece.
Artist Yang Yingji has been residing in Munich for many years. The hotel's collaboration with Yang Yingji began in April this year. After months of communication and exchange across time zones and geographical distances, the art exhibition “Xiangugu’s Twelve Poems” was officially unveiled this autumn. Yang Yingji's works utilize familiar media to activate local cultural elements, enabling audiences from diverse backgrounds to resonate emotionally with her creations.
